Special vs Custom vs Standard? Choosing the Building Blocks-17

Continuing from last week, let us look at another one of the problems once the Data Centers move to the edge and get distributed.

When the connectivity is within the data centers, and the fiber is ample, we do not worry about link utilization. But when the same leaf spine connectivity get distributed over a geography, we need to make sure that we have a way to flexibly use this capacity.

One way of doing it to ride over a shared infrastructure, or in other words ride over a shared connectivity. The connectivity between locations can be shared by the data center function, the mobile voice connectivity, consumer internet connectivity as well as enterprise connectivity, that way there is a possibility to have a lower economics, not close to the data center connectivity but close enough.

This poses another problem. The possibility that the capacity will not be available when needed. And that the performance can suffer despite the availability of the Compute and Storage infrastructure.

So you can either over provision and pay more money or share the infra and compromise on the performance.

I think you will like neither and will seek another option that may be a better fit. Think about it and let me know what you believe will be a good answer. I will share my solution of this problem next week, so stay tuned!
