Plan, Plan and Plan: The key to transformations
Continuing from last week, today we will cover another simple aspect about transformations. They say that Rome was not built in a day. I learned it as another phrase when I was at Huawei, a phrase called, “Yi bu, Yi Bu” translating into “One Step, One Step”. It relates to the proverb that the journey of a thousand miles, begins with a single step. But… yes there is a but. One must always be cautious about another proverb, “If do not know where you are going, any road will get you there”.
So, the first part to the transformation is about deciding on a destination, so that you can begin the journey to it. The trick to a true transformation is to Plan properly. The following three rules may guide you to getting the best results.
- Plan for a longer horizon (5 Years is something that I prefer)
- Break that whole thing into milestones
- Yearly milestones for Year 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5
- Quarterly Milestones for the first year, Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4
- Monthly milestones for the First Quarter, M1, M2 and M3
- Review and rest the plan after every quarter
- Keep the five year vision same or adjust it based on the new information
- Adjust the vision for remaining milestones
In short, Aim, Shoot, and Course correct. Plan Regularly. One Step by One Step and keep the focus on the destination. Do not waiver, be regular and you will surely be able to complete the journey and enjoy the fruits of transformation.
Stay tuned for more next week.
