Leaders in my life

What I learned from Mr Atanu Dasgupta at Power Grid – Part 4

Continuing on my experiences with Mr. Dasgupta, in today’s blog, I will cover another critical piece about being a good leader. Let us take a look at the next lesson.

Commitment is bigger than feelings

Many time during my career at Power Grid, we faced situations where we felt that we were not doing the right thing and that we should do things differently. I will take my ideas to Mr. Dasgupta, we will discuss and debate and come up with a proposal. We will spend significant effort to polish the proposal so that it is ready to take to the management.

Mr. Dasgupta will orchestrate the meeting and get us a presentation. We will present our Idea and then leave Mr. Dasgupta to take the discussion to a conclusion. Well, many times we were able to change the direction the management has taken, but sometimes it was not so.

Mr. Dasgupta would simply come back and say, “JP, Boss does not agree.” And then he will encourage us to continue to work the way we were and make sure that we deliver to the management vision, even if some of it still felt bad.

The commitment to deliver was always bigger for Mr. Dasgupta than the personal feelings. I have realized over my career that it has been a great approach. The management may not be able to realize the overall vision if each individual started to choose their own direction based on their own feelings. Sometimes, what may feel wrong to you, may still be the best alternative.

I hope that your management has the openness to let you present your Ideas and that once the decisions are taken, you will have the wisdom that “Commitment is bigger than feelings” and that you must deliver.

Next week stay tuned for another lesson from Mr. Dasgupta.
