Youtube by Google, a powerful complimentary gate for the Internet- Kings of Disaggregation
Continuing from the last week, let us look at another gate that you use for the Internet marketplace. Allow me to take you back to the Dubai mall and the experience of buying a sports shoe for yourself. Last week we talked about the fact that we might disregard Advertisements, discounts etc, in case we get a friend, who recommends us an alternative that he/she may believe is the best for us and we concluded that Facebook in that sense is a far more potent gate for the Internet.
Read this article to get some more perspective on why Facebook is a big threat to Google.
Now going back to the Dubai Mall example, let us consider one more twist, as your friend suggested, you looked up the Asics Store and were on the way to it when you saw a famous Athlete entering the Nike Store. Out of curiosity, you follow that guy into the store, seems you are in for a surprise, that guy is there to talk about the running and is sharing his advice for serious runners like you. He talks about a specific Nike research project that he has been associated with and shares that the new shoes just launched by Nike are lightyears ahead of anybody else. He shares his own experience using the shoes and recommends the shoes for anyone who is a serious runner.
I believe expert advice counts a bit more than the passionate advice of your friend, right? I believe, while you do not doubt the best intentions of your friend, you still weigh the experience of the famous athlete a bit more. So you change again and lean in for buying the Nike model of shoes.
Well, did you connect the dots? How many times do we just look up for a video on Youtube for a recommendation? And if the recommendation is from someone established, does it not color our thoughts?
In that sense, Youtube is a strong answer to Facebook. Google has by masterstroke gained position no. 1 again in the battle for the preferred entrance to the Internet.
Stay tuned for more next week.
