Network Transformation

The Law of Limitations: The Second Transformation Killer

Last week, we started looking at key aspects that delay the transformations and we discussed the law of incremental planning. This week we will look at the second law.

Many times, we impose limitations upon ourselves and do not explore the possibilities, the key limitations that hold us back are:

No Time: As networks grow to meet quarterly business growth, and we need to execute quickly to be ready “Just in Time”, we do not have time for scenario planning. We go by what we have been doing and what we already know. We rely on proven solutions, there is no time to explore. Many times, we miss great opportunities to learn and know about new things, even if they are offered to us. People find learning as a burden.

No People: All the people are busy in execution and crisis management, we cannot spare anyone to evaluate options, compare architectures and look for alternates. Being first has much higher priority over being right. We are bound to promote a culture of speed over accuracy and then we miss the opportunities to take that fork to the future.

No Tools: No money for the tools that can help us evaluate options. Most of the operators do not pay for access to research, do not pay for planning and simulation tools and do not spend money on training their teams on newer technologies. There is no engagement in standards bodies or any investment in research. With no tools and no skills, it is hard to pave the path to future.

With the compound effect of these three things, we keep running blindly into our future. We do not have a vision that we follow, we turn to our past to build our future. In the process we lose our chance to transform.

Stay tuned for more next week.
