What I learned from a TED Talk by Jim Hemerling – Organizational Change Expert

Continuing from last week, today I will cover a TED talk by Jim Hemerling. If you have about 13 minutes, you can listen to this talk on Ted by clicking here. Else please read the following few lines to get the gist of it.

Can Organizational Change be a Positive thing? For all?

Most Transformations have “Financial” and “Operational” Goals, these can be energizing for leaders, they are not what will motivate people. The only way to have great transformations to succeed and be sustainable, is to put people first. Here are five imperatives he stated that achieve this objective and help make transformations a success.

  • Inspire through Purpose : Think of how Lego transformed.
  • Go All In: It should not be a head-count reduction in the guise of transformation. It should not just be cost cutting, it should be also about right investments in leadership and transform the way the company works.
  • Enable people to be successful during and after the transformation: people need the right skills and should be ready to contribute.
  • Instill a culture of continuous learning: Look at how Satya Nadella changed the culture at Microsoft and look at what he achieved.
  • Inclusive Leadership: Listen to people, give credit where it is due. Take people along.

If you put people first, you can also achieve wonders.

Stay tuned for more next week.
